Orthodontic mini-implants

When there are severe dental irregularities and complex tooth movements are required, orthodontists may resort to skeletal anchorage or orthodontic mini-implants.

These mini-implants are used in addition to conventional orthodontic appliances. They provide stable and reliable anchor points for complex tooth movements.

What are orthodontic min-implants?

Orthodontic mini-implants are small, temporary implants used to provide additional anchorage during the movement of teeth. These implants serve as fixed anchor points for appliances such as braces.

They are often used when traditional braces cannot deliver sufficient force or stability, or when conventional anchorage is not feasible due to missing teeth or a lack of healthy molar roots.

Instead of using the teeth themselves as anchor points, these mini-implants provide stable anchorage directly in the jawbone.

Treatment with mini-implants

These small titanium screws are placed directly into the jawbone (through the gum) under local anesthesia. The procedure is minimally invasive and can hence be perfectly performed by an orthodontist, instead of a surgeon.

A crucial part of this treatment is the digital planning of the implant placement, which allows the optimal position of each implant to be determined in advance.

This planning improves the safety and significantly simplifies the clinical procedure, making the treatment more comfortable and predictable for the patient.

Once the orthodontic treatment is completed, the mini-implants are easily removed. In most cases, no anesthesia is needed for their removal.

Benefits of orthodontic mini-implants

The enhanced anchorage provided by mini-implants offers several benefits:

  • More efficient treatment > Since mini-implants provide direct anchorage at various points in the mouth, tooth movements can proceed more quickly and in a more controlled manner. This can shorten the overall treatment duration.
  • No impact on other teeth > Mini-implants allow for precise and targeted application without causing unintended movement of adjacing teeth.
  • Avoidance of jaw surgery > In some cases, mini-implants can help avoid surgical procedures that would otherwise be necessary to achieve proper dental alignment.
