Night retainer
The night retainer often plays an important role in preserving the results of the orthodontic treatment of our patients.

In certain cases, we recommend an additional night retainer to prevent the teeth from shifting back to their original positions - even when fixed retainers (also called retention wires) are already in place.
What does a night retainer look like?
The night retainer, also known as a removable retainer or Essix retainer, is a clear plastic appliance.
Your teeth fit snugly into this tray. Since this type of retainer is custom-made for your specific dental structure, it ensures a perfect fit and maximum comfort while you sleep.
How long should you wear the night retainer?
Your night retainer can only keep your teeth in the correct position if you wear it consistently - ideally every night.
If you forget to wear it for a night, or you skip a few days because of a cold or discomfort, there’s usually no need to worry. However, it's important to resume wearing it as soon as possible to maintain alignment.
In most cases, the orthodontist will recommend nightly wear for a certain period until the teeth become more stable. However, we advise many patients to continue wearing their night retainer for life.
How do you clean the retainer?
Each morning after use, rinse the retainer under cold water and clean it with a soft toothbrush and mild soap.
Do not use toothpaste, as it contains tiny abrasive particles that can scratch the plastic, potentially damaging the retainer and making it more prone to plaque buildup.
Rinse thoroughly with cold water only - never hot water, as heat can deform the plastic.
Let the night retainer air dry in an open container. Before putting it back in at night, give it a quick rinse under cold water.
Is there some white buildup on your retainer?
Over time, you might see white calcium deposits on your retainer. In such cases, a toothbrush and soap may no longer be sufficient.
You can soak the retainer for about an hour in diluted white vinegar or in water with a special cleaning tablet (e.g., Steradent).
These tablets, commonly used for cleaning dentures, are widely available and safe for use with retainers.
Whichever method you choose, be sure to rinse the retainer thoroughly with cold water afterward.
