Butterfly braces or Palatal expander
Does your child have jaw issues, such as a narrow upper jaw or a crossbite, where the upper teeth or molars close incorrectly on the inside of the lower teeth? If so, a palatal expander, also known as a butterfly brace, might be the right solution!

To address these concerns, orthodontists often recommend an expansion device. These palatal expanders help align the teeth and jaws properly, making future orthodontic treatments easier.
What are butterfly braces?
Palatal expanders, also called butterfly braces, spider screws, or rapid palatal expanders (RPE's), are orthodontic devices designed to widen the upper jaw in children. The devices are attached to the upper molars and use a small screw to gradually apply pressure to the palate.
By regularly turning the screw - following the orthodontist’s instruction - the bones in the upper jaw are gently pushed apart, creating more space for the teeth to grow properly during the transition from baby teeth to permanent teeth.
What to expect after getting butterfly braces?
Treatment typically lasts around 6 months. While expansion is usually achieved within a few weeks, the device remains in place afterward to stabilize the new jaw position.
Mild pressure or discomfort may occur in the first few days, but children generally adapt quickly to the expander.
Good oral hygiene is essential to keep the palatal expander clean and prevent damage during treatment.
